Natural allies of the USA and contradiction with recent articles by Dr Pipes

Reader comment on item: A Critical Moment For Turkey

Dr Pipes,

I disagree with the notion that the USA has natural allies, you called them the securalists. That is in my opinion a falsification of the real picture regardless if it may be or not intended. Dr Pipes, Since when was King Fahd and king Abdullah secular? there are 2 Canadian boys facing decapitation in that extremist family run state. Since when was Kuweit or United Arab Emirates secular? Since when was Pakistan Prevez Musharaf a secular ally?

On the one hand, it is painful to see an Islamic moderate party in power like the one now in power in Turkey. On the other hand it is painful at least for terrorism victims to see an exrtreemist ally in place like the Saudi regime. If Rajab Tayeb Ardogan is not moderate Dr Pipes, who are the moderates you were talking about in previous articles? the Saudis? or the Sheiks of the Emirates? are they the FIS of Algeria? or the Salafis of Tunisia? This should underline a contradiction from your part. If not, then is it a dramatic change of view point you are initiating?

Daniel Pipes replies:

I did not refer to either King Fahd or King Abdullah as secularists, only to the Turks opposed to the AKP.

The Turkish prime minister is tactically a moderate, but he comes from an Islamist and appears still to be one.
