With respect ot your statement: "Since faith is by definition not based on evidence, its object is amorphous and subject to change on the whims of its adherants" I give you Heb 1:1

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Simply put, faith has substance, and is THE evidence of things not seen. It is not subject to change.

This is the definition of Faith per GOD's Holy Word - The Bible
