Atonement for?????

in response to reader comment: A Slight Atonement

Submitted by Howard Mirkin (Thailand), Sep 15, 2006 at 22:01

Raheel, I made my original comment because I do not think even a major attack would dissolve the polarization that has taken place in the United States, although one hopes it would. But I never claimed that President Bush lied about WMD. There is a huge difference between telling a lie, and making a decision based on inaccurate information.

If you are in business, I am sure you know what I mean, and you have probably experienced this yourself. But even if major stockpiles of WMD have not yet been found, there is little doubt from the Kay and Dulfer reports that Saddam did have plans to restore his WMD program. There is also evidence in the Iraqi documents that were captured (a web search for "Iraqi documents" will get you plenty of information). WMD were not the only reason though. Saddam did have connections with terrorists.

President Bush never claimed Saddam was connected with 9-11, only that he was supporting terrorists. I think there is little doubt that he was a mass murderer. The Iraqi people should be able to live in freedom under constitutional law. If the future proves that they do not have the will to resist, then that will be their fate. But they now have the opportunity, which would not have been possible any other way, because the rest of the world was too disinterested, or too busy making money from Saddam's theft of Iraqi wealth. You live in a free country, but how would you feel if you had to live under a Saddam?

When you say that Europeans dislike America, I take it that you are referring to polls. I have seen very few polls where the results are not skewed and biased to get results desired by the pollsters. I lived in various countries in Europe for about 6 years and saw no signs that Europeans have more freedom than Americans. As for you being "left leaning", my suggestion is that you read "The Road to Serfdom" by F.A Hayek, who clearly shows that the road to the left is the path to state control and slavery. Are you certain that this is what you really want for you and your family?

Have a nice day
