Real One,

I love Australia! The US and Australia have much in common in terms of willingness to make a strong stand in the face of adversity. I was upset to hear that your citizenry was disarmed, but that is another topic entirely.

Americans watched the riots in France and the "homegrown" terrorists in the UK with wonder. We are continually perceived as a very racist country, when in fact we integrate foreigners much better than do our European cousins. You will hear (in the immigration debates in the US) the term "assimilation" over and over. That, coupled with the nationalism that you mentioned, are the reasons for true integration.

I agree that immigration can bring great things to a nation, but from the American perspective, millions of unskilled, uneducated, low-wage workers do not add to our prosperity. They allow a certain affluence, since no hard, physical labor is done (in California anyway) by anyone who speaks English fluently.
