Let Muslims disambiguate among their subdivisions

Reader comment on item: Immanuel Kant vs. Israel

Dear Dr Pipes, today I got a chance to read your article "Sorry, Mr. President, ISIS is 100% Islamic".
In this article you quote Bernard Lewis as, "It is surely presumptuous for those who are not Muslims to say what is orthodox and what is heretical in Islam." I concur with both yours and Bernard Lewis' viewpoints. The onus of differentiating between the goodness and badness of Islam's different sub types falls on Muslims themselves. As far as I am concerned, Islam is what Islam does and Islam is what Islam says. For the first I go to the news pages and, for the latter, I go to multiple translations of the Quran and the Hadiths.

Recently, I have dropped all adjectives like Islamist, fundamentalist, orthodox, conservative, Shia, Sunni etc from my thinking. I just use the adjectives Muslim and Islamic in my descriptions. A third source of knowledge about Muslims for me are the individual Muslim themselves. On that front all individuals are worthy of respect and rights.
