I dissent from Hazony's view

Reader comment on item: Immanuel Kant vs. Israel

Submitted by Peter Herz (United States), Aug 23, 2010 at 22:01

Hazony has it wrong. I've read Kant's _Perpetual Peace_. Kant argues that turning Europe into a concert of "free republics" rather than monarchies would bring perpetual peace, because enfranchised populations would not let their rulers lead them in to war (the sport of kings). I suppose looking back on a couple of centuries, Kant's vision failed to pan out.

As for the new paradigm which Hazony rightly describes, all I can say is that a world government would probably descend into bloody civil war pretty quickly.

Maybe it all goes to show that Homo Sapiens is not really a very pacific species?
