The new paradigm doesn't explain enough

Reader comment on item: Immanuel Kant vs. Israel

Submitted by Erich Wieger (United States), Aug 17, 2010 at 18:12

Bias against the nation state, in favor of international government, is very selective. Not only Iran and Syria, but China, Russian and Japan get "free passes" from this new paradigm. The targets of hostility are American and Israeli independence. The deeper targets of hostility are, apparently, American and Israeli exceptionalism. I think that there is something beneath this too: the antipathy felt against the finger-prints of the God of the Bible, upon biblically influenced peoples. America is not, Biblically, an "elect" nation, but it has been populated in part, by very large numbers of people who understood themselves to be mercifully elected by God for his purposes on the earth. That is one of several main influences that feeds into American uniqueness. The religious people in Israel look back to God's election of the their people, and God's future purposes for them in the earth. I think the Kantian paradigm is more of a superstructure than a deep basis for increasing anti-American and anti-Israeli feeling. Jealousy and hatred toward any evidence of God selecting people not by merit, but by mercy, for distinctive purposes, fits the pattern of the selective hostility against these two nations. Islamic antagonism fits this pattern too, as does the tendency to rewrite both American and Israeli histories to erase any sense of Divine intervention or calling.
