Morry, this is an interesting comment. As a natural scientist myself let me disagree and say that scientists are busy with facts, not truth. Here are some recent facts that support the national idea being very much alive: The UK has four distinct national soccer teams out of which England is only one. The province of Friesland in the Netherlands enjoy their own language and have lots of frisian flags on display. The former Jugoslavia fell apart into very much national states in the 90ies with all the conflicts we remember. When the Soviet Union fell apart the european ex-soviet-republics desired nation-states. Most notably the three baltic republics and Ukraine. The german reunification is a big example of going for a nation state. Going for two german states both being part of the EU was never an issue. The motivations behind this are clear: Preserving a language and national culture, heritage, resist foreign domination. If I was to look at a map of Europe from my school days and compare it to the map today I see with one glance the variety of more colours showing more nation states.
