Reader comment on item: The Muslim Claim to Jerusalem
in response to reader comment: Israel has no interest in Mecca

Submitted by Prashant (United States), Jun 3, 2015 at 22:03

Dear Dr Pipes,

your reader Michael probably agrees with me but still missed the point I was making. I was pointing out the hypocrisy. If you go around the world, you will not found a religious center of a religion where Muslims have not built a "sacred" structure of their own. Babri Masjid in India is one example, Cordoba in Spain is another, Hagia Sophia is yet another, Cordoba initiative near the 9/11 ground zero is one more, and, of course, the great mosque of Jerusalem is also highly sacred Islamic structure.

Whether or not a place has a historic Islamic connection, it becomes sacred to the Islamic cause if it is sacred to anyone else. But if Abraham had any connection to Mecca, Jews and Christians must have also deep connection with Mecca. But, ironically, they cannot even enter the city. That was the point.
