Here you are speaking as if any of us could ever have the power to make any of the choices you raise, and you offer them as alternatives; yet in previous posts you are arguing that whether Islamists come to power or not is the choice of the people and none of our business.

Please explain why this is. And by the way, I think your 4 choices are completely off. I would list the choices of action/policy as follows:

1) acknowledge that there is a difference in culture between western powers and Middle Eastern politics and learn these very well; 2) appoint real advisors and liaisons to each country who have broad and rich experience in dealing with the cultural and political situation and who can advise and implement realistic and effective strategies; 3) re-establish the critical element of deterrence, once we understand that this is the surest way to achieve peace rather than tube-feed money and arms to these countries who will always use it against us. This means a strong show of force, establishing clear guidelines, and leaving them then to govern howsoever they choose, but with the knowledge that attacks in the west will never be tolerated.
