Reader comment on item: Caught on Tape: The Middle East's Culture of Cruelty

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), May 16, 2009 at 16:35

in truth, Dr. Pipes' article is an horrible dictu, but it is also indicative of what happens when the human being becomes inhuman, due to the desensitization of what is right and wrong. Do different countries really have a conflict between what is torture and what isn't? It is born into every human being the knowledge of right and wrong, good and evil.

As the highest life form on the planet, we humans have certainly dropped below the animals. That the torture of Mohammed Shah Poor happened at all is disgusting and upsetting, but for it to be videotaped is another level of depravity. I wonder if the US diplomat who watched this video, apparently unmoved by its content, would react the same if he was the one being tortured?

It seems that the Spanish Inquisition is still alive and well; where's the outrage? For the West to "maintain a distance from this ghastly aspect of Middle Eastern life" will require the West to become more knowledgable about the Middle East. It is high time the US begins to reassess relations with any country that uses wealth to run amok, breaking laws -- both moral and legal---and destroying what is left of the dignity of what it means to be a human being.
