Mr. Pipes zeros in on the *real* problem

Reader comment on item: Why Oslo's Hopes Turned to Dust

Excellent article - sums up the problem concisely and accurately. There is no point in Israel doing anything politically or diplomatically towards the Palestinians until they recognize Israel's right to exist *as a Jewish state in its current demographic form*. Demanding a "Right of Return" for Palestinians is tantamount to calling for the destruction of Israel through the back door. What would happen to the USA if 100 million Arabs were allowed to immigrate to it? End of USA, as we know it. The meaning of the "Right of Return" is proportionally identical for Israel.

We hear a lot that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is all about "Palestinian rights". It isn't. The core of the conflict is "Jewish rights". Israel recognizes that Arabs have rights in the area formerly known as Mandatory Palestine. The Arabs say that the Jews have absolutely no rights.

YK's comments also brought up a very important and true point. Nazareth and Bethlehem used to be overwhelmingly Christian. No more. Both with Muslim majorities. That's why the terrorists who took over the Church of the Nativity could get away with it, without any public protest from the Christian community, which now lives in fear in the Palestinian areas. So much for Arafat's claim that his is a defender of Christian holy sites.
