Although such dramatic political instability may well be characteristic of the Middle East, one often overlooked example of a state whose existence is threatened in a very real way is Taiwan. Many governments and analysts perform much mental and linguistic gymnastics in constructing an argument against its claim to independence in blatant appeasment of China, but denying the fundamental right to self determination for such a large and well defined population is a gross violation of their rights. The emergence of China as a new superpower, with the biggest population and a fast growing economy to back it up, and a growing nationalistic sentiment among the public, Taiwan has much more to worry about than Bahrain.
