Threatened extinction of nations

Throughout history many nations have been threatened with extinction; it is only because we have seen with our own eyes the damage caused by wars and other conflicts in the 20th Century and, sadly, moving into the 21st Century. In the future there will be volumes printed about the most recent conflicts, particularly, the threatened extinction of Israel, a fact which spreads a whole spectrum of emotions and opinions across the entire globe, from sympathy to apathy to intense hatred.

There is still so much diversity within the conflict of whether or not Israel has a "right to exist" at all, something that it's unfriendly neighbors wish to contest at length. In the book A History of the Arab Peoples (by Albert Hourani, Faber and Faber Limited, London, 1991) he says: "The Palestine National Council, the representative body of Palestinians, met in Algiers and produced a charter proclaiming its willingness to accept the existence of Israel and to negotiate a final settlement with it." (page 433, chapter 25).

It seems that this charter has long been forgotten, tossed into the great void of broken promises. It would bode well with Arab nations to allow Israel to continue to hold it's place in the world, but unfortunately, the battle seems to be never-ending. A naive question might be: If other countries are allowed to exist, why not Israel? There is no easy answer to this, except that perhaps other Middle Eastern nations are simply jealous, and we all know where jealousy leads to.
