Reader comment on item: Away with Crusaders, Crucifixes, Crosses, and Christmas
in response to reader comment: impact of the cross

I believe Rick puts it perfectly. If I was in Israel, I would not only feel completely at ease with the religious symbols, but I would ADMIRE them. In a world where religion is in many ways degenerating into either carelessness or extremism (Muslims), a mainstream symbol open to the public is indeed welcoming.

Its not always about the religion either: its about traditions. The United States is founded on the Judean-Christian ritual, whether we would like to admit it or not. The colonies where formed for relgious freedom, and then all other purposes (God, Gold, Glory). This is indeed a Christian country with Christianity built into the law system, and even economic system. Even if we dont admit it with symbols, it remains.

People who are uncomfortable need to suck it up. In a country with a Christian base, you can expect these symbols. In Israel I would enjoy the star of David, and not just because of the JudeoChristian tradition; and in Saudi Arabia I would tolerate the Crescent. These symbols are a part of the culture and tradition. They are what the people, the country, and the law comprises.
