The BBC article you quoted cites that this is a theory (not fact) from one acedemic. It does not validate your point in the slightest as it is yet unproven. The fact it's on a debate website and that it is not an official BBC article has, me thinks, escaped your attention (as it appears a whole load of history, art and culture).

It is unfortunate that you're basing the entire Muslim civilisation on your experience of a bunch of Arab men. Firstly not all Arabs are Muslims, you'll find that Christian Arabs will hold the same attitudes in many cases, it's a cultural thing not a religious one. Secondly, Most Muslims are not of Arab origin. Thirdly, the people you have come across are clearly uneducated, even in the principles of Islam. Just because you are born into a faith does not mean you have the conviction and belief.

Most Muslims don't believe in the Plurality of the Muslim World but yet you do. With one fell sweep, you can dismiss the lives of one quarter of humanity. You seem no less hateful then the angry bearded men on television. It appears that you have more in common then I ever will. Good luck!
