Well, there's a reason for that

Muslims do believe desecration of the body is a sin (tattoos), and he shot them in the chest, not beheaded them, at least until he cut off their hands and heads to make the bodies untraceable if found. There is no indication the man was a muslim, in the first place, except the ignorant belief anyone with a middle eastern name is a muslim. The two guys he killed had muslim names too, under that misconception. He killed them and stole their car. This isn't a religious killing at all, just a grisly one.
