Dear Dr Pipes:

Your reader Amin Riaz is on the right track when he implies that many of the current and recently deposed leaders of the Islamic countries were not true leaders and did actually impose themselves on their people. I must admire Amin for looking at the problem objectively and acknowledging very evident fact about Islamic countries. But an immediate question that follows is why so many Islamic nations end up being subject to this kind of imposition? If a pattern is repeating from Morocco to Jordon to Iraq to Iran to Pakistan, it cannot be coincidental or random. There must be a cause for it. I surmise that any society that tries to find a system of government by non-democratic means, is bound to end up in a draconian state (communists are no exceptions).

Further, if you add a theocracy to the mix then you not only fall into draconianism, you get chaos as a bonus. This is exactly what is going on every Islamic country on the map. I also don't think that blaming the west for this chaos is right -- Islamic societies were not models of peace during any time in history.
