How about the Arab League?

Reader comment on item: Back to the Shores of Tripoli?
in response to reader comment: Is America likely to do something for greater good?

Is the Arab League going to do something for the greater good – rather than looking out for its own self-interests? I somehow doubt it. The Arab League told the UN to create a no-fly zone over Libya, and chose to leave their own air forces on the ground.

This so smacks of a time when the people of Kuwait were being murdered and plundered by the Iraqi army – but western allies threw the Iraqis out, saved the Kuwaiti people (who hate us and who celebrated Hurricane Katrina) and put out the fires the Iraqis started. Except that was an invasion of one country by another, not an internal affair.

After this recent conflict in Iraq it is well documented that no American oil companies are doing business there. The elected government of Iraq chose to do business with European, Russian and Chinese oil firms, and negotiated the major share of oil profits for Iraqis, as they put to use those oil sites Americans protected for them.

America's record of helping others for the sake of "good" is poor really really poor. Compared to what? To the Saudi record? The Syrian record? The Iranian record? Or the Russians? The Chinese? The Saudis give how much more than America's 4 billion dollars per year to fight AIDS in Africa? Double? Triple? Or is money a bit tight in the kingdom of the two holy places right now, what with oil only about a hundred bucks a barrel and that recent Rolls Royce price increase?
