Reader comment on item: That NIE Makes War against Iran More Likely

Submitted by yuval Brandstetter MD (Israel), Dec 13, 2007 at 01:09

Press release by Hatikva Party.

The NIE is doing us a favor

NIE has just released a report which downplays the emergent status of Iranian Nuclear threat. This report was received with great consternation in Israel, seen as a loop-hole through which the Administration can abdicate the responsibility for abrogating the threat posed by a Nuclear Iran.

But is this turn of events for the worse? To take Mearsheimer and Walt at face value, the failed American involvement in Iraq was machinated by the Neocon Jewish influence to eliminate the Iraqi threat to Israel. However fallacious this argument is, it has a wide following in the administration, so that now Israeli leadership is placed under pressure to yield to Arab interests so as to "pay" for American intervention in Iraq. How much greater would this pressure be if America used it military might to destroy the Iranian Nuclear threat directed first and foremost against Israel?

The price to be exacted for American military strike on Iran is the complete withdrawal from the Jewish heartland, and the consequent construction of a terrorist Arab state 5 miles from Jerusalem, 10 miles from Tel Aviv, all under the direct auspices of American overseers. This Arab state will be the Iranian forward base for the destruction of the Jewish state, now with more venom and determination than ever, making the Jewish State non-viable. No matter who attacks Iran, it will be blamed on Israel. Thus an American attack on Nuclear Iran is contraindicated to the interests of the Jewish state.

The CIA report makes this eventuality highly unlikely. No US president is expected to place one American life at risk to save the Jews again. Which means Israel is facing this Islamo-Nazi enemy on its own. The Raas and Long report (Osirak Redux, web.mit.edu/ssp/Publications/working_papers/wp_06-1.pdf ) gives us clear indications the destruction of Iran's nuclear capabilities is feasible. The CIA report therefore is a blessing in disguise, because it places the onus of protection of the Jewish State upon the Government of Israel – where it should be, and should always remain.
