That, too. And indeed, tradition is (and can be very hard to break)...Combined with fear, it can be a very powerful factor. It keeps moderate-conservatives and moderate-liberal Muslims from being unified (since moderate-conservatives are often hard to sway. One exception I can note is Hamza Yusuf, an American Muslim scholar). Times have changed, and it is up to Muslims to revive ijtihad for modern times.
