Moderate Islam

Reader comment on item: How to End Terrorism:

Submitted by David W. Lincoln (Canada), Dec 5, 2006 at 10:44

In Bangladesh, which is a "moderate Muslim" state - a newspaper was fire bombed. Why? Because the publisher stood up to Islamic Extremists, and he had good things to say about Israel. In Malaysia, Christians are at best second class citizens and they are barred from advancing from beyond the servant class. "Moderate Islam" is simply "Islamism", albeit in slower motion.

To draw a Canadian political analogy, a New Democrat is a Liberal in a hurry. Even "Moderate Islam" since 1453 has a shorter list of accomplishments as compared to the West since that year in which Constantinople was conquered. For this is more than about ideology, this is a cultural phenomenon which stems from there being no room for the pursuit of virtue other than by Mohammed. For in the eyes of a traditionalist Muslim, the pursuit of virtue in the name of someone else is like looking upon the poorer relatives of the family. Part of the family, but possessing little if any clout.
