Reader comment on item: Polls, Palestinians and the Path to Peace

Submitted by Rick Kral (United States), Feb 19, 2003 at 17:24

Regardless of rejectionism, the U.S./Israel need to constantly challenge Palestinians/Arabs to accept reasonable peace initiatives similar to Barak Plan. If the only result is a stalemate, such initiatives at least give U.S./Israel an opportunity to claim the moral high ground and combat Palestinian propaganda that feeds extremism throughout the Moslem world.

I have no illusions about Arab extremists of all ilks (Leftist, Islamic, even Christian), but the U.S. needs to give whatever friends it has left in that region some rationale to defend their support, or we will have to pay an ever increasing price to defend not only Israel but our own vital interests in the most strategically important part of world (oil, Suez Canal, WMD's, hostile populations, etc.).
