Real Purpose of the Treaty

Reader comment on item: In 1796, U.S. Vowed Friendliness With Islam

Submitted by Sam Pyeatte (United States), Nov 7, 2006 at 13:39

This was a treaty signed under duress. A few weeks after John Adams and Thomas Jefferson arrived in London in 1785, Algerian pirates (Muslims) captured two American ships. Adams tried to negotiate the release of the crews with the envoy of the Sultan of Tripoli who was recently assigned to London. Adams was told a state of war existed between America and Tripoli and would continue unless a treaty of peace was signed. The terms were that America must pay a tribute to all of the Barbary States for peace. England and France were already doing it. This is the typical Muslim extortion racket. Pay or be killed. It is nothing new.
