Reader comment on item: Louis Farrakhan Is Not a Muslim

Submitted by Andy (United States), Aug 29, 2005 at 14:42

Whether Minister Farrakhan is a true Muslim, to me is not the main question in dealing with the issues of black liberation and progression. While is important to identify the atrocities of whites in regards to black slavery in America, there seems to be at best a blindness, perhaps a deception, in embracing Islam as the answer for blacks, especially in light of the historical track record of Arab slavery.

Long after slave trading by Europeans was abolished in Western Africa, slave trading by Islamic Arab merchants continued in the Eastern Africa (the "gold coast" of Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, etc) for years. You can go today to Zanzibar and still see the blocks where black slaves were bought, sold, and transported. How is Arab slavery any more honorable than European slavery?

In light of this, and also the genicide in Sudan over the past years where about 3 million (growing everyday) western and south Sudanese Blacks have been murdered, maimed, raped, empovished, and driven from their homes by "terrrorists" and the Islamic government of Northern Sudan, I question the integrity of Louis Farrakhan and any of the various groups of black Islam, who say they represent the concerns of black people and promote Islam as a path to black liberation and progression. It just isn't so. It time for African Americans to lay aside bitterness and vengeance, embracing an ideology that only keeps in slavery, a slavery from within The truth will set you free.
