The question "..Why does a country have to submit to European customs to prosper..." is asked.

It is not a matter of mere 'customs' - poorly developed countries have to apply common sense to prosper.. Europeans, ( unburdened by retrograde political system disguised as a religion such as islam) pioneered applying scientific methods to all aspects of technology and society.

They learned to operate under democratic governments, evolved sophisticated legal, judicial, educational, transport and health systems. These built on each other. Education produced technicians and scientists - and through their efforts electricity was harnessed and machines and technologies of all types were developed.

Other countries saw that these institutions work and copied them - and thereby started improving the day to day lives of their citizens.
