Other causes of desertification of North Africa

Reader comment on item: Islam's Inadvertent Patterns

Submitted by Laina Farhat-Holzman (United States), Mar 12, 2014 at 14:16

I want to add a thought on the desertification. The conquest of North Africa unloosed Bedu fighters, all of whom detested agriculture. They deliberately destroyed vineyards (anti-alcohol) and irrigation systems, and set loose their sheep and goats. It wasn't only the pig prohibition, but the wine prohibition.

Another consequence of Islam was the institution of creating eunuchs to guard harems. Many slave men were castrated upon capture.

One last thought on cause and effect about desertification: there was a process of global warming going on and many areas once forested had been stripped and never came back. It wasn't all dietary, I don't think.
