Or is mr. Pipes wrong in assuming, that the ban on pork caused the desertation of islamic countries ?

Dr. Pipes is very correct because the historical evidence at least in the case of Egypt and North Africa reveals that the Arabs brought with them their sheep which was destructive to the ecology and this led to desertification of vast fertile lands in what was Roman North Africa and Egypt and within a century of the Arab invasion of Egypt the country was in ruins and instead of being the bread basket of the late antique world there was mass starvation and decline in population and one can very much blame the sheep brought by the Arabs in big numbers and their grazing habits

In regard to the Jews they were about 10% of the population of the Roman Empire (their numbers declined following the Jewish uprising of 115CE) and they were surrounded by others who raised pigs and compare this with the Arab invaders who came in large numbers and imposed their sheep and way of living on others including the prohibition on even the existence of pigs. Another death blow was inflicted on the wine industry south of Alexandria (Wadi el-Natrun) which can only be blamed on the Arabs and their sheep and when the Arabs were done with the wineries they looted the great monasteries of Wadi el-Natrun and looted and destroyed a huge chunck of the literary history of Egypt
