You need to read his diary entries to see how wrong you are. This was a premeditated act and part of a great ambition to destroy America, stated clearly in his diaries. He joined the army precisely to do damage.

Here's one quote: 1996: "destroying America was my plan as a child, and as a juvenile and in college. Destroying America is my greatest goal."

Unbalanced and could have quit the army? He joined it to do damage.
