How can you hope to help believers if you are blind to faith?

You can modernize sharia or make a supermarket out of the koran only if you don't believe in their religious value and message, only if you don't have faith in them. If you do, you can only feel disgust for such attitudes. And then you tend to do what the prophet told to do in such cases: war. That is why "islamdom" will only be peaceful, creative and productive when all "muslims" will see the islamic scriptures for what they truly are: a historic monument for sure but no less a worthless pile of lies. Then, there will be some evolution. And we do can help to get there faster. But surely not by taking side within the islamic controversy.

We can help by discrediting islam, by telling the truth about it, and proving that it is the truth. By spreading light. Not by taking part in the mess in supporting some set of supposedly smartly chosen lies. Not by spreading blindness.
