Dr Pipes,

Again no surprise. The US needs a hero and is content to manufacture one. What that hero does and says of course are entirely irrelevant. I suppose one might suggest that we all could be vivisected and similar conclusions could be reached about us if certain facts about our backgrounds were unveiled.

However it is sickening when an individual is lauded with such patriotic praise when he has a background that openly and overtly demonstrates he was anything but. It is beneficial obviously for America to be able to claim an extraordinary sportsman like him in the patriotic sense, however it illustrates the painful and final triumph of myth over reality.

Ali is in a sense more than a man and represents to America what is projected onto him. Plainly when the Jumbo Jets crashed into the Twin Towers on Sept 11 he was almost embarrassed about his choices - and I personally was embarrassed for him. Nonetheless he should have been mindful of the end result of the rhetoric that his philosophies inherent anti-intellectual and irresposibly rabid anti Americanism has wrought.

At best he is a fool and at worst he is a traitor. If he hates America so much he should leave it. But like most of the left wing bunglers in our midst he is too busy enjoying the superior lifestyle and freedoms that the blood of his more patriotic bretheren have earned him.

Reuben Horne.
