Reader comment on item: Muhammad Ali v. George W. Bush

Submitted by Daniel M (United States), Nov 29, 2005 at 10:30

The whole affair is perplexing and a rather sad commentary.

And although GW is certainly no "mental giant," I'd have thought he (and his advisors), would have more sense than to bestow such a presigious (indeed, HALLOWED), award on someone of such questionable character and with such an obviously selective and self serving sense of "morality."

I submit that it's because of Ali's suffering from Parkinson's that he was honored so. It seems to me to be, simply, another case of political correctness run amok!

Ali vs Cosell certainly brings back fond memories from my innocent childhood. And Ali's comedic antics are legendary - as was his debauchery.

But, I hardly see how such shenanigins qualify him for our highest civilian award: an honor concieved while the fresh blood of true patriots ran red - and by the bucket full. Considering how Ali evaded the draft in such a shameful manner - dodging his sacred duty as an American Citizen - I consider this to be an insult to ALL those whose sacrifice enabled him to make millions upon millions of dollars - prancing around like the prima donna he truly is.

Quite frankly, the more I think about it, the angrier I get!

I would be quite curious to know the "hows and whys" which resulted in this pathetic charade.

Could Ali's cult of personality REALLY be so powerful, as to cause the whole selective body (responsible for selecting recipients of the Medal of Freedom), to suffer collective amnesia?

Am I missing something here?
