Reader comment on item: Muhammad Ali v. George W. Bush

Submitted by john w. mcginley (United States), Nov 29, 2005 at 17:17

See? Except when you write about Ariel Sharon, you're the king. Nothing to add except this obiter dicta: In retrospect it is frightening how I overlooked some of the character flaws in President Bush when he was running for office. They were there from the start. And now he's come undone.

But we face three more years with a president who has lost whatever substance he had and a vice president who's just the membrane of an aneurism away from sudden death. Wouldn't that make the Speaker of the House President? Who is that? Looking back on it, it's still a no-brainer relative to Gore and Bush in 2000. I still get the shivers when I think of Gore being the president on 9/11/01.

But seriously -- and no one who knew me during the 2004 campaign would believe that I am saying this -- John Kerry might have been, all things considered, better than Bush is turning out to be. Maybe America is paying for all of its sins. But if we take a dive, can Israel be far behind? Neverthess I still believe Divine Providence (which does not work in such a manner that things are pre-determined, but rather through bestirring and elicitation) will send an opportunity to America by which to remedy even a failing presidency. Much will be overlooked in the "really wider" schema of things precisely because the United States has managed to be such a great support to Israel. Oh dear. My grandfather told me to never to talk about religion or politics, or sex. Well, at least I have obeyed him on one of those matters. John W. McGinley
