Reader comment on item: When Israel Stood Up to Washington [in 1981]

Submitted by Debanjan Banerjee (India), Apr 9, 2010 at 23:00

Looking at the current situation in Israel , it reminds a lot about the time of the Hasmonean and Herodian kings of Egypt. These dynasties made alliances with the superpowers of that time i.e. the Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire.

In the end they decided to become the vassals of the Roman empire. They were having a quite good time in the relationship with the roman empire till the more religious of the Jewish people came to conflict with some aspects of Roman control like taxes.

Ultimately this led to a series of brutal war and rebellion between the Jews and the roman empire which ultimately resulted in the destruction of the second temple and persecution of the Jewish communities throughout the Middle East.

Is there a lesson to learn in this above mentioned Jewish history for today's Israeli politicians and intellectuals ? If so what lessons should they learn ?
