Israel set back on its heels

Reader comment on item: When Israel Stood Up to Washington [in 1981]

There was also a time when every assault on Israel was guaranteed a retaliatory attack. Israel made it clear what the rule was. Attack us, we attack back. But then the Gulf War came and, for assurances and defensive weaponry, Israel agreed not to respond to Iraqi attacks on its soil. That also was unprecedented. That momentum must be reversed. Israel must show the world it has no interest whatever in anyone's "good graces," that it has a country to run and to defend by whatever means it deems, repeat, it deems necessary to the assurance of its sovereign rights. It's not enough to whine that some don't recognize its right to exist: it must prove it exists, and as often and as loudly as it takes. It'll get through the thickest heads eventually. But if it loses faith in itself? That's another and a sadder matter.
