We should reward freedom and democracy

Dear Dr Pipes, Banning immigration of Muslims is impractical, unconstitutional and unjustifiable. But restricting the number of visas from the countries that do not support the values that we support might be legal, constitutional and morally correct. Among all the Islamic countries Turkey and Bangladesh are still more democratic than others. We should give the immigrants from these countries more favorable treatment. It is very easy to verify if a country is a constitutional democracy or not. We should discourage immigration from such countries. If we categorically give more visas to people from the countries that are decent democracies and fewer to people from dictatorships and theocracies, we will send the right message to the people and governments of the world.

But we can never depend on our governments to do the right thing. Often times we can do the right thing ourselves. Every one who values freedom and democracy should make sure that they do not travel to draconian societies and do not buy products manufactured in those countries. What can be wrong on that?
