How Timely!Reader comment on item: [UNRWA:] The Refugee Curse Submitted by Avraham (United States), Aug 19, 2003 at 22:24 Dr. Pipes, once again your analysis proves to be almost inexplicably visionary. During the 1990's, you documented the the rising threat of Islamism before any of us knew how vulnerable we were. Today, your insightful observation that "By falsely attaching a refugee status to these Palestinians who never fled anywhere, UNRWA condemns a creative and entrepreneurial people to lives of exclusion, self-pity and nihilism" reflects the ideological basis of today's terrorist attacks in Baghdad and Jerusalem. In short, the Islamist leadership recognizes that the Arab leaders have hidden their lack of concern for the Palestinians behind UN programs. Today's attacks were no doubt coordinated by the terrorism-sponsoring states (Iran and Syria), and their message to the Arab leaders could not have been more clear:"You can no longer maintain an ambiguous policy towards the US or Palestine by hiding behind UN institutional immobility, and you cannot separate your policy towards America from your policy towards Israel. You must either fully support the jihad for the liberation of all of historic Palestine, or you will be relegated to the protection of the Jewish- controlled US, which has proven incapable of protecting even its own cities."
