in response to reader comment: The Israeli face of defeat

Thank you for educating us on this subject. Please advise as to what territories have been ceded that were not universally recognised as 'bargaining chips' taken by the Israelis when the combined efforts of the neighbouring Arab states demonstrated their military impotence to such a laughable extent in 1948? Which parts of the borders defined by the UN in 1947 when Israel was created have been ceded? There must be many examples of them to elicit such a posting so I look forward to being educated.

However, it seems strange to me that it can be perceived as a victory for a territory that was taken in retribution for an attempted invasion, and retained by the Israelis for decades as a permanent reminder to the Arabs of their impotence, and finally given back as a reward for a reduction in the number of Israeli schoolchildren being blown up by homicide bombers, can possibly be perceived in such terms. It does, however, offer an illuminating insight as to why negotiation is so fraught. If Israel gives an inch it is only lauded as a victory for the terrorists rather than accepted with good grace. It must be like negotiating with a baboon.
