Irresponsible and incorrect use of the word 'enemy' .

Reader comment on item: Subsidizing the Enemy

Submitted by Ghulam Muhammed, Mumbai (India), Apr 28, 2006 at 13:59

... certainly British government does not treat Iran as an ‘enemy’. The British have full diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Trade, banking and finance as well as cultural exchange links with Iran are in place. Blair government has not declared war with Iran. They continue to negotiate with Iran over nuclear proliferation issues.

... It stands to reason, that since UK government is not treating Iran enemy, it does not see any reason to interfere with the freedom of religion that all its citizen enjoy. There is therefore no case for the charge of 'subsidizing the enemy'.

Daniel Pipes replies:

(1) Yes, the British government does have diplomatic relations with Tehran, but these days, that means little - Iran and Iraq maintained diplomatic relations during their 8-year war.

(2) I am writing from my own perspective; I see Islamists as the enemy. I don't ask the British government's approval for my views. Nor, I might add, does it ask for my approval.
