in response to reader comment: Islam can coexist

Submitted by Raj (United States), Feb 13, 2006 at 17:17

I'm new to this site. I have read many of you people's comments. I'm neither a muslim nor western. So as a third person I would like to say some thing on my part to both sides.

To a westerner :

A thinking of an westerner, of course, is much more different from that of a muslim in terms of life style, individual's freedom, etc. I want to say that if any one reads Holy Quran in depth, he will understand that what islam is and how much it opposes on what few muslim radicals teach today. These radicals surely do not represent the entire islamic view. I would say religion is a very personal thing. In that sense, i say that others can comment on that. But what i say is we should also respect them. To coexist we need to respect other's sentiment. As a person working on psycology, i would say that religion helps a man to build his own world, his own beliefs, etc. For many people this buildup is very much related to their psycological stability. So when a threat or insult comes to that belief, he would be naturally opposing. Besides science, if western society gives importance to indiviuals, then we are obliged to respect the neibhour even if he is much different from us. Will you ever hurt your friend by satrising his beliefs ?. So why can't we all be friends. If westerners say tolerance is important in a society, now is the time for you to prove that you are really tolerant. Muslims are NOT terrorists. Some muslim youths had been brain washed.

To a Muslim :

You have right to oppose anything that you don't like or tolerate. But please express or tell your fellow muslims to express it in a non-voilent way. Boycott is a peaceful way of expressing your mental pain. I'm sure most of the muslims are opposed to the current voilent approach. But you should outwardly oppose this violence. Generally burning embassies, threatening will never work out. An eye for an eye makes both blind. I'm sure that if Holy quran's teachings is interpreted and taught correctly to the fellow muslims, i don't think muslims would had been marked as terrorists. Peace loving muslims should get actively involved to change this image.

Please oppose openly on any voilence by whoever it is. Please realize that islam's name is being spoiled in front of the world. Believe that every issue whether it is palestine or whatever, that it must be and can be solved by non-voilent measures. In the stuggle for your right, if you take voilence, there are greater chances that your right reasons will not be visible in front of effects of voilence. Please think.

Final point :
No two individuals can have same beliefs and thoughts throughout, even if they belong to same religion, country, group or even family.

If we do not believe in co-existence, then we will starting dividing ourselves by religion, by language, by culture, then by continent, then by country, then by state, then by family, and finally we will stand alone.

You can use this very site to construct the strained relations. A change of few people here will surely make a difference.

I expect comments on my thoughts.
