Putin's invasion gives meaning to "civilizational"

Reader comment on item: How Ukrainian Refugees Could Inadvertently Erase the West

Submitted by Dave (United States), Jul 9, 2022 at 14:37

There is a wide spectrum of opinion between the extremes of totally open borders and stringent border controls. The welcoming of Ukrainian refugees has bridged this gap for many of the compelling reasons listed here, but also because the barbarism that Russia has inflicted on Ukraine constitutes a blatant offense against civilization that has aroused the West.
Many westerners have taken their freedoms and the gifts of western civilization for granted for too long. The outrages that have taken place in far-away third world countries, the ISIS beheadings, the actual or intended genocide of religious minorities, the execution of gays, the sanctification of hate crimes, are horrifying, but they are remote, and the mainstream media either ignores them, or liberals rationalize them away as having been provoked by Israel or the West.
The Russian invasion is different. Like the Holocaust, it's unprovoked, cannot be rationalized easily, and graphically demonstrates the fragility of civilization itself. It is for this reason that I don't think that the Ukrainian refugee issue will lead to a total abandonment of border controls such that the West will be erased. Rather, what will destroy the West would be a Ukrainian defeat, followed by further defeats at the hands of the the current anti-Western coalition of Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and their partners in evil, including radical quislings undermining the West from within.
Remember the song, "If I had a hammer"? What's happening in Ukraine is like the bell, ringing out danger, and the people can hear it.
