Ariel, "pay each Arab family to leave" is equal to Israel admitting the land belonged to the Arabs in the first place. State budget buying out individual families is an unequal bargain in terms of power. Israel wouldn't get what it wants. Namely to have the matter settled in Arab minds. The state of Israel cannot find rational advice in historical precedents. There is not one. That is why looking at the future, every decision will be very emotional. Both by its nature and its effects.

Today Israel's borders are defined by the territory the IDF can defend. The day when Israel's borders are defined by the territory its neighbours accept is a long way from now.
