in response to reader comment: Moderate Islam is the solution?

Here's the snag about 'moderate Islam' from my experience. Every 'moderate' moslem I have met, and I have met some nice ones, is a non-practicing moslem - 'I am not religious' - their Islam is purely nominal. To talk about moderate moslems is akin to talking about moderate Soviet communists - officially everyone in the Soviet Union was a communist, but the official party was adhered to by few, indeed the average Russian was a peace loving nice sort of person with nothing in common with the beasts who foisted the revolution on them - but the real communists continued with their atrocities; Communism provided the vehicle for a great expression of evil. Islam looks just the same. Like communism, Islam is under existential threat - the madness of the Koran cannot withstand the scrutiny of reason, to which it is necessarily subjected as the Islamic word perforce engages with the west - and the only possible answer psychologically to this impasse is either to reject islam ( become nominal) or - violence.
