Reader comment on item: Once considered anti-Islam, senior scholar says he's now in the middle

Stoning adulterers, for example, is in both in Sharia and in the Bible. It is a matter of interpreting religion in a mature way and progressing out of the stoning age. As I understand it, Dr. Pipes is pro-Islam, a mature interpretation of Islam, and is warning against "Islamist" influence and terror. Anybody can "hijack" a religion and use it to do whatever they want. The Western World has a Jimmy Jones, David Koresh, or Charles Manson to match any Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, or Ahmadinejad. We are not better people, but our culture, forms of government, and relationship to religion has evolved to prevent these type of people from getting real power.
