Reader comment on item: Once considered anti-Islam, senior scholar says he's now in the middle

Submitted by Katy (United States), Aug 18, 2010 at 15:04

how this is much of a distinction, except insofar as Pipes is a scholar, and lot of bloggers...aren't. (I'm being kind here.)

For Pipes, this is his life's work, his vocation and avocation. It's not quite the same as screaming about WTC mosques, and missing the (cough) "nuances" that actually do in this case inform the subject.

Pipes is also an excellent writer. A lot of bloggers...aren't.

It's not an elitism thing at all. It has to do with observing Pipes' wonderful clarity of mind, and how he arrives at his point. Very good stuff indeed.

Okay, I'm a snob. I like intellectuals. But that's not to say I dismiss bloggers. Populism and its practitioners (think O'Reilly) just make me cringe.
