That Kaaba is not an idol but a direction, is semantics. The idols of Hindus are also not gods but make the devotee direct his or her mind towards God. Idol-worship is a much abused word - every religion indulges in it in one form or the other. Writing 786 at the beginning of a document, putting a sign of Cross, displaying a picture of Kaaba or Christ are all idol worship by other means.
