"Zombie-like allegiance"

Reader comment on item: Predicting the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election
in response to reader comment: Rough seas ahead

You bring up a very good point, Rebecca Moulds. This "zombie allegiance" is, I believe, overwhelmingly responsible for Obama's popularity.

I saw it on the faces of all sorts before the election; meet an Obama supporter, present them with facts, and they begin to get this glazed look across their face. And still, blindly, adamantly profess allegiance.

I encountered this from grandmothers, small business owners (Indian, Syrian, Armenian - didn't make much difference), single parents, world travelers, youngsters just entering the work force. With the exception of my own relatives and a few close friends, the only person I came across who (emphatically, to his credit) supported McCain was a friend from Bangledesh - largely because Cindy McCain adopted a Bangledeshi.

We've become a sea of subjectivity, with absolute inability to see beyound the nose on our face.

The "zombie allegiance" will get worse - Rome wasn't built in a day - it wasn't destroyed in a day. Actually, I'm looking forward to see the mamouth kick in the cahones this nation needs to wake up - we'll probably need three or four - then, something along the lines of "reconstruction" after the U.S. Civil War, methinks, will possibly emerge (if we're still here).
