The average American voter will reject a presidential candidate if he is married to the wrong wife, if he comes from a too-high educational and/or financial background, and if he is opposed to war.

Probably, as some of these comments show, also if he's not a Caucasian.

The only actually halfway meaningful criticism I've read about Barack Obama so far characterizes him as naive, inexperienced, and shallow on politics. Those criteria are worth nothing in the American presidential election. Proof: George W. Bush.
