Sounds like Charter schools in the south

Reader comment on item: On New York's "Khalil Gibran International Academy"

In the south US, charter schools are all the rage. They have met with some success, but in NC at least 12% have shut down. The appeal of a smaller school, etc. included "theme" schools that focused on arts and schools that divided among racial lines. Funding is contingent on performance, though, since performance in public schools in general is not always something great, this is not a very high bar that the schools must meet. Still, agendized schools that really end up leading children on an alternate educational path do not seem to meet with success in terms of children's performance on standardized tests and therefore, in terms of continued enrollment.

This Middle eastern academy sounds like a charter school. As a publicly funded school, its students will still be measured against the same ruler that other students are measured. In terms of surviving the editorial commentary of any particular instructor, please note that this is an ongoing issue in all schools--in fourth grade my son was told that Israel is an Arab country and recently, a school teacher was dismissed in a NC school for handing out a word search that was anti-Israel.

Specialized schools will continue to pop up as long as traditional public schools continue to fail our children. The public funding aspect of this school may in fact protect its students and others from hostile and/or anti-American thought or action.
