We need understanding

Reader comment on item: On New York's "Khalil Gibran International Academy"

Submitted by Bill (United States), Apr 28, 2008 at 19:29

I think this school is a good idea. From what I've read, it doesn't seem to be religious in nature. Arabic is a language, not a religion! It's like saying a German language school will preach facism or a Chinese language school will preach communism. I know it is easy to fear something different and I also understand that it is easier to give in to our fears than it is to face them. However, what we need now is to open the doors of understanding, not close them further. Personally, I think religion (all of them) has done more harm to the human race than good. There are radical Christians, Jewish AND Muslims, and all of them are responsible for countless death and misery.

Also, for those who think public money doesn't go to religious schools check out this article http://www2.nysun.com/article/35680. And these schools openly state that they should receive more public funding even though they are religious in nature. Religion is such a divisive thing, it is a shame that we would vilify someone who believes in interfaith cooperation. I think this is irresponsible and un-American.
